Blizzard celebrates 20th anniversary

Blizzard turned 20 two days ago. From their humble beginnings in 1991 to their great games enjoyed by millions of people today, Blizzard has surely made its mark as one of the best video game developers.

And Blizzard wants to celebrate the event with the supportive community. One day of celebration just isn't enough to fit the company's 20-year history, so expect an all-year round celebration.

Battle.Net to implement new Matchmaking system

Blizzard announced a new automatic matchmaking system to be implemented on Battle.Net. BNet is the popular free gaming service provided by Blizzard to its players for its various titles in the Warcraft, StarCraft and Diablo series. This move could be the first in a series of changes to prepare Blizzard's old games to use the upcoming Battle.Net 2.0.

Another game based on World of Warcraft is in the works. Warcraft, Heroes of Azeroth is set six years before the start of the conflict in WoW. It is designed to capture the strategic element of Warcraft III and the hero power-levelling in World of Warcraft - the best of both worlds!

New World of Warcraft Statue at Blizzard HQ

Blizzard's Headquarters in Irvine now has a new statue in its courtyard - a stunning 12-foot Orc riding a wolf mount. The statue was created in New Zealand by Weta Workshop, the same company that made the special effects in the Lord of the Rings movies. While it acts as a decoration of sorts, it also proudly tells the world of the company that WoW made the highly-successful game that Blizzard made: World of Warcraft.

WoW made half of Activision-Blizzard earnings

This does not come as a surprise to me. The popular MMORPG World of Warcraft topped the Activision-Blizzard's money-makers list for fiscal year 2009 racking up about half of its earnings, financial analyst Arvind Bhatia of Stern Agee said. With 11.5 billion subscribers (December last year), it's no wonder that this gold mine outperformed Call of Duty, Guitar Hero and other titles.

7 Fun Facts about Warcraft III

  1. The animation of a dying Demon Hunter shows the hero committing suicide. In essence, this should mean no experience points for the enemy when the hero is killed. But that would be unfair.
  2. The Druid of the Talon and Necromancer units as well as the prophet Medivh were voiced by Michael Bell. His other game-related voice works include the Druid class and Nihlathak in Diablo II: LoD, The Fear in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater and Haer'Dalis in Baldur's Gate II.
  3. The Buring Legion was originlly planned as a playable race but due to balancing issues, the idea was cancelled.

Warcraft is one of the biggest names in the games industry today due to the success of the strategy game series and the popular MMORPG, World of Warcraft. Each game added life to the Warcraft universe and shed some light to the events that shaped the gameworld. One Warcraft game never hit the shelves though, and was left nearly forgotten beneath all the glory that WoW created - Warcraft Adventures: Lord of the Clans.
